In 1903 Angelina opened in Paris and earned the reputation of sophistication and indulgence. Angelina quickly became the place to be seen and served many Parisian aristocrats such as Coco Chanel and Proust, just to name a few. Angeline is a place of elegance and refinement, combining poetry, romanticism and serenity, and now after 110 years in business, Angeline is now located at Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi.
The tearoom is steeped in memories of comforting, indulgent moments spent in its salons – a haven in the middle of chic and vibrant Paris. Firmly rooted in its past, but also decidedly forward-thinking, Angelina gracefully adapts to the times thanks to its enduring elegance.
In addition to Angelina’s world-famous tearoom serving artistically created desserts that epitomize the French way of living, Angelina also offers a full breakfast, snack, lunch and dinner menu in the same luxuriously indulgent fashion as in Paris. During our visit we were graciously accommodated by a full staff that was eager for us to enjoy the Angelina experience so much so that we began to feel like we stepped out of a Renoir painting.
The opening of Angelina’s tea houses and boutiques over the world in large international cities such as Hong Kong, Dubai, Doha, Tokyo or Beijing, shows a consistent growing appeal for the French art of living. INTERNATIONAL Chine, Japon, Singapour, Qatar, Émirats Arabes Unis
We started with three salads that were so fresh and crisp I questioned whether there was a garden in the kitchen. Attentively created to showcase the very detail that makes Angelina world-famous, I paused to absorb the food art in front of me before destroying the savory creation with my fork. Our first course included the Angelina Smoked Salmon Salad with Astara Scottish smoked salmon, Roman-style artichokes, green beans, tomato, avocado, hard-boiled egg, seasonal mesclun salad leaves, the Tuileries Salad with a duo of carrots, beetroots, asparagus, red and black radish, and soft cheese of toast, and Rivoli Sala a trilogy of tomatoes, crispy goat cheese sticks, baby spinach and rocket leaves all served with a trio of dressings to sample: Mustard, soy sauce, honey; Lemon, extra virgin olive oil and Classic with balsamic vinegar, virgin olive oil. All three salads were amazingly delicious, fresh and an excellent example of how artistic food can be.
African Hot Chocolate: An Angelina essential. The famous “African” hot chocolate is composed of three carefully selected kinds of African cocoa from Niger, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. The secret recipe for this chocolate mix is specially put together for Angelina.
For the main course Maha, Sue, and I ordered a trio of Angelina favorites: Roasted chicken supreme, lightly whipped carrot purée, peas, potatoes and spring onions, parsley veal gravy; Pan fried sea bass fillet, wild rice pilaf and curry sauce; and as Maha and Sue convincingly declared, the best veal dish they have ever eaten in their entire lives — Crusted standing rump of veal, vegetable confit, thyme lemon sauce. Also what made the meal even more enjoyable was the attention to detail and the interest the staff took in helping us choose a meal. Careful consideration was given to our likes, dislikes, and the recommendations the staff made were perfectly suited to our taste.
The Mont-Blanc. This iconic pastry combines meringue, light whipped cream and chestnut paste vermicelli to delight even the keenest of palates. The Mont-Blanc’s unique, unrivalled recipe has made it Angelina’s famous trademark pastry since 1903.
Although we were absolutely full. And told each other (and the staff) that we could eat no more. Angelina wouldn’t take no for an answer. They escorted us over to the display case; the one that holds the chocolate art and the beautiful creations of the pastry and candy chefs who would obviously, and for very good reason, be utterly insulted if we did not at least have a bite. And then another bite, and another, until we were intimately introduced to the entire last page of the menu. As Maha says, “I like to eat and that means if I have a little love handles; then I’ve lived a good life.” And the good life begins at Yas Mall because — Life is definitely exquisite at Angelina.
